National Ski Academy is seeking new volunteer board members to join the organization beginning in 2024. All interested and qualified candidates are encouraged to inquire. NSA is particularly interested in candidates with legal or risk management expertise, fundraising expertise or experience with securing corporate sponsorship, or experience in the field of independent school education at the secondary school level.
National Ski Academy (NSA) is a non-profit registered charity established in 1986 to provide an environment for student athletes to maximize individual potential through the pursuit of alpine ski racing excellence, academic achievement and personal growth. As of 2010, NSA became a Ministry of Education inspected private school, granting high school credits in Grades 9 to 12. Our programs have helped to develop Ontario Team and National Team ski racers and many of the top coaches in the country.
A Vision for the NSA Board of Directors
Candidates should be passionate about youth and supporting their efforts to pursue dreams of high-performance athletics. They should also want to support youth in pursuing a post-secondary pathway and efforts to become engaged community members. A track record of commitment at a board level (i.e. governance experience), and facility working in a small team setting reporting to a larger team is required.
The Board of Directors provides oversight, sets the strategic direction of the organization and is accountable for organizational results. We aspire to a Board of Directors that is diverse and inclusive, representative of the community and audiences we serve, and has significant experience related to high-performance sport, alpine ski racing, and independent school education. Special emphasis will be placed on candidates from the following sectors:
- Previous corporate board experience in the profit or not-for-profit sectors.
- Fundraising experience and a willingness to advise on this function within the NSA context.
- Significant experience in the education sector, preferable at the secondary level in relation to the independent school system (I.e., CAIS, CIS Ontario).
- Senior level risk management experience, preferably holding a current industry designation (CRM or equivalent).
- Legal expertise including a license to practice law in Canada, preferably in Ontario.
Time Commitment:
NSA’s Board of Directors has 8 full board meetings annually (meetings generally take place online, in the evening). Members are also expected to serve on one standing committee (Finance and Audit; Governance and Human Resources; Marketing and Communications, and Fundraising); committees will meet as need to conduct their business, but at a minimum, prior to each board meeting.
Board members can expect a time commitment of three to six hours monthly plus additional hours to undertake projects or initiatives related to supporting the infrastructure and growth of NSA.
Service on NSA’s Board of Directors is without renumeration.
The Selection Process
A three-step process will be led by a selection committee of the Board of Directors supported and administered by the Chair of NSA’s Board of Directors.
Step 1 – Applicants will submit an expression of interest email to: board.recruitment@nsa.on.ca responding to the five questions below, accompanied by a resume.
Step 2 – Short-listed applicants will be invited to a 30-minute interview with the selection committee.
